About Dr. Barbara Correia

Barbara is the driving force behind our applied biosciences team, currently leading cutting edge projects such as TuberSense and TuberGene. Barbara is driven by a deep-rooted commitment to reducing food waste and enhancing crop quality in the supply chain. TuberGene holds immense potential for revolutionising the agriculture industry by enabling higher-quality gene-edited crop to enter the food supply chain, while TuberSense is enabling non-destructive, early detection of crop spoilage through volatile sensing.

With a PhD in Biology and Applied Biosciences from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, awarded in 2017, Barbara possesses a formidable academic foundation. This expertise has been instrumental in shaping Barbara’s role as Principal Research Scientist. Her responsibilities span the gamut, from scoping and conceptualising new projects to securing vital funding, and ultimately, ensuring the successful delivery of innovative R&D initiatives.

What sets Barbara apart is her unique blend of academic prowess, industry acumen, and enthusiastic communication skills. Barbara’s journey has traversed eight enriching years in academia, where she explored diverse facets of plant science and applied biosciences. Subsequently, Barbara has dedicated five years to the R&D industry, a pivotal period spent with B-hive as a research scientist before also becoming a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow. During this tenure, she has been playing a pivotal role in shaping and delivering innovative solutions that address critical challenges in agriculture.
